Caught off guard by the man’s kindness, however, Hessa ends up failing to carry out the task, and thus is banished from the sacred Hall of Smoke as punishment for her disobedience. One day, our protagonist receives a message from her patron deity commanding her to kill a lone stranger traveling through their village. ![]() The story opens on the fictional world of the Arpa Empire, following a young warrior priestess named Hessa who is sworn to Eang, the Goddess of War. Maybe it’s all the time I’ve spent playing Norse mythology inspired video games in the past few years, like the latest iteration of God of War series or more recently the new Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, but I found Hall of Smoke to be quite enjoyable, probably because it scratched so many of the same itches. Jeff Mann's Cub is far more NA and overtly erotic, but I just love that there are multiple options for young queer cubs to see themselves in fiction. This is actually the second novel I've read about a young husky/chubby/fat gay boy with the title Cub, and I want to take a second to celebrate that, too. (I should maybe start by saying if you don't know what a hi-lo book is, it's a high-interest, low-reading level book, meaning it's accessible without speaking down to the reader, focusing on language accessibility, without sacrificing complexity of plot.) I really liked this, and there's a lot in here for a short hi-lo book, which seems to me to be a delicate balance to pull off. ![]() ![]() ![]() Introducing the MIT Walker Collection - bringing innovative new STEAM books written by experts.25 books about the outdoors to inspire your green-fingered kids for National Gardening Week. ![]()

As a novelist, scholar of folklore and folk tales, and professional storyteller it is something I am familiar with and fascinated by, and it dove-tails with my current Creative Writing PhD at the University of Leicester: a dramatization of the creative process in novel form, and so this is a reflection on my ongoing investigation into creative writing research through practice. I will argue that Holdstock’s Mythago Wood Cycle offers a powerfully resonant metaphor for the creative process: how stories are created and written (informed by the oral tradition), and how we, as readers and listeners, interact with them. ![]() In this article I would like to discuss Robert Holdstock’s Mythago Wood Cycle – Mythago Wood (1984) Lavondyss (1988) The Bone Forest (1991) The Hollowing (1993) Gate of Horn, Gate of Ivory (1998) and Avilion (2009) – in the context of creative writing praxis. ![]() ![]() ![]() Drifting away from the glittery allure of a complex plot to the rather less glamorous grit of a fully rounded character doesn’t exactly sound the most exciting of projects. Irritatingly, it seems the cosmic and eternal ‘ they’ may be right. Such an irritating phrase isn’t it? So sweepingly ignorant of how back-breakingly hard constructing a convincing character out of words can be. People, like they say, who can get up and walk off the page. Just create one, two, five, twenty or forty complete and whole people. Plot is not the point, didn’t you know? It’s character. What is it exactly that makes a good character? Everyone seems to have an opinion. ![]() |
